ASOF Meeting 2020
The ASOF meeting planned for 2020 was originally scheduled to take place in Reykjavik, Iceland, from 6 - 8 April 2020, hosted at the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute.
However, just as happened for many other activities in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented our meeting to take place in the way we had anticipated. We finally were able to hold the meeting as an online event, with a reduced number of participants, priority was given to early career scientists. While the form of the meeting was unusual for ASOF, the key themes to which we solicited submissions where those which are at the heart of ASOF:
- What are the fluxes of mass, heat, liquid freshwater and ice from the Arctic Ocean into the subpolar North Atlantic?
- What are the terms in the budgets of mass, heat, liquid freshwater and ice for the Arctic and subpolar North Atlantic Oceans, and how are they changing with time?
- How will anticipated changes in Arctic freshwater efflux impact the MOC?
- What impacts do the changing Arctic and subarctic physical environment have on ecosystems?
- How can ocean circulation, sea ice, and climate models be improved through issues 1 and 2, and how can these models help address them?
In addition, we invited contributions to this year's focus theme:
How can anthropogenic and natural tracers help us documenting and understanding the circulation in the Arctic and Subarctic Seas?
You will find those contributions which the authors were willing to share publicly as downloadable files in the agenda.
For 2021 we hope that the ASOF meeting can take place as an in-person meeting again. Andreas Macrader and his colleagues at the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (now moved to Havnafjördur, close to Reykjavik) keep their invitation up. We will announce a tentative date (likely in autumn) early 2021.
